Gosht Beli Ram

Gosht Beli Ram

This delicious mutton dish was crafted by the fabled Chef Beli Ram of Punjab. It is accentuated by the robust flavor of freshly ground coriander seeds. A traditional recipe of a bygone era, this was commonly prepared and cooked in one big pot as a community meal.



  • Mutton (on the bone) – I lb. 
  • Salt – 4 tsp
  • Ginger paste – ¾ oz.
  • Garlic paste – ¾ oz. 
  • Turmeric – 2 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 2 tbsp
  • Jeera powder – 1tbsp
  • Red chilly powder –2tsp
  • Kasoori methi powder –2 tsp
  • Sliced onions – 1 cup
  • Browned onions – 1 cup
  • Pounded coriander seeds – 2 tbsp
  • Pounded black pepper – 1tbsp
  • Yogurt – 16 oz.
  • Small green chillies– 2 
  • Mustard Oil – 8 oz.


  1. Whisk the yogurt till it is smooth and creamy.
  2. Add all the ingredients together and mix well. Keep aside to rest for 10 minutes.
  3. Place mutton in a stovetop casserole dish or handi.
  4. Put the dish on a medium/high flame and bring to a boil. Lower the heat to a gentle simmer, cover and cook until the meat is cooked through and tender. 
  5. Serve hot with chapatti, or any crusty bread.
